Day Eight! (Of the Summer with Supermom Series! Check back most weekdays this summer for FUN things you can do at home with your kids to cure summer boredom!) I took a bit of a break from these posts, as I’ve been having too much fun PLAYING with my kids! But, back to the grindstone to share some ideas with you!

Activity: Frozen Fruit!

I am a HUGE believer in cooking with your children! There is something magical about being in the kitchen with your kids. Today I have some fun, simple, and healthy things for you to try with your kids on a hot summer’s day! Enjoy!

Suitable For: 3-high school!
Skills: cooking, healthy eating, prediction
How To:

1. Begin by preparing a selection of fresh fruit. Have your children assist you with the washing and cutting of the fruit. (Using a plastic or butter knife of course, under supervision.)

2. Gather your “sticks.” You can use skewers for the kabobs, and popsicle sticks for the frozen fruit pops.(I do not recommend using the metal skewers with children, as they can easily poke the mouth and tongue!)

3. Slide bite sized chunks of the fruit onto the skewers, making a fruit kabob. We love to use all types of melon, berries, grapes, and banana. (I don’t recommend using apples or citrus.)Place the kabobs on a cookie sheet, and place in the freezer for several hours, or until the fruit is firm.

4. Cut watermelon into wedges (or into fun shapes using a cookie cutter!) and insert a popsicle stick! Place on a cookie sheet and insert into the freezer for several hours or until the watermelon is firm.

5. Place a bowl of grapes, blueberries, strawberries, or melon balls in the freezer!

6. Make my very favorite vacation treat…frozen bananas! These may be slightly less healthy than the other options, but they are really fun to make, and your kids will love them! Dip your bananas into melted chocolate chips, and then sprinkle on your favorite toppings…sprinkles, nuts, coconut…Place on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper, and freeze until firm.

Extensions:

Have your children make predictions about what will happen to the fruit when you place it in the freezer.

Have them estimate how long it will take for the fruit to freeze.

Have your child compare/contrast the fruit before and after it has frozen. Have them vote on which they prefer.

Examples: See the photos above!

Enjoy! I hope you get into the kitchen with your kids this week!
