“Lice.” It’s the classroom’s four letter word. It is that which shall not be named. The very word is enough to get you feeling all itchy and scratchy. These lousy (*derived from louse!) little bugs are also the subject of David Shannon’s new picture book, “Bugs in my Hair.”

This book is guaranteed to make you laugh–and itch! From the opening picture of a happy, oversized louse appearing with his suitcases, you know these bugs are determined to stay, and Mom is about to go nuts!

It’s a Lice-a-palooza! While I’ve never personally had to deal with lice, I’ve had many a student sent home with bugs in their hair, and know just how frustrating they can be. Like I said, lice have been deemed a “taboo” subject. No one wants to raise their hand and admit their child has them. But here’s the thing…

Nobody talks about them, but they are everywhere. (Some estimate 20 million children a year host them.) Oh the shame and humiliation of having BUGSinmyhairbugs in your hair! But if you go to school, or have play dates, chances are good you might meet them someday. Maybe you already have! Lucky for you, the unwelcome bugs in this story are so funny you will be laughing aloud–even when Mom attacks them with battle-tested anti-lice weapons.

This book is a must-have for every teacher and family. This book in classic Shannon style, puts a smile on your face and is chock-full of super cute illustrations all while helping to remove some of the stigma of having lice. Plus, it’s full of some fun facts! (Did you know that we get the term “nitpicking” from picking out lice nits?)

David Shannon’s mix of humor and factual information makes Bugs in my Hair the perfect book for this very itchy subject!

One lucky Chasing Supermom reader is going to win 3 fantastic David Shannon books! We have all three of these books and LOVE them! You’re going to “itch” with laughter!

  5. We had the lice scare last winter…luckly we excaped without any! My biggest tip is lice do not like dirty hair and keep it in a pony tail too.

  6. I have had Lice twice when I was a child and remember my mom washing my hair with stinky Rid and the metal comb. My daughter so far has not had lice but she just started school, so we will see.

  9. WOW!! This hits super close to home!! My kids had them recently, discovered this Monday morning when I went to wake them for the first day of school!! Lots of laundry and vacuuming. Horrible:( They pretty much missed the first week, grades 3 and 1… I was so bummed.I used Tea Tree Oil in a spray bottle to treat carpet, rugs and mattresses. Splice is prescription lotion for their hair, leave in 10 minutes. kills lice and nits.

  10. I teach Kindergarten so I have had many students in the past 20 years that have had lice. Bless, I feel so bad for them and their families to try to get rid of it.

  11. Thankful we have never experienced that before.

  12. I got head lice when I worked at a day care from one of the children. It was terrible as a young adult! I wanted to cut off all my hair. It took a while to get rid of it completely but now if my kids get it, I will have a lot of sympathy for them!

  13. I’ve never had to deal with it, but my sister has. Her girls all got it at school and it was a nightmare! She said the best thing was drownding them in vegetable oil on their hair then putting a shower cap on them, then washing with the medicated hair wash. Also picking everyone out. YUCK!!! I pray I never have to deal with that, gives me the willys!

  14. Thankfully we have never experienced them! Can’t wait to read the books!
