We LOVE play dough! Not only is it a wonderful sensory and play experience for kids, it’s also a fabulous vehicle for learning. As you play you can discuss things like texture, color, and shapes. Kids can use play dough to form letters, or use letter stamps or cookie cutters. There are endless possibilities, and it is always well worth the small mess on the kitchen table.

My kids are always asking for scented play dough. Traditionally, I use Kool-Aid to make my play dough. For this play dough, I decided to use some of my essential oil and create a fun pink grapefruit scent, just in time for Valentine’s Day. It has a light citrusy scent and is a great mood-lifter. My kids had tons of fun making hearts galore!

playdough

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1 cup water

1/4 cup salt

1 T oil

red food coloring

grapefruit essential oil

To Prepare

This recipe is SO simple! Just add ALL of your ingredients to a small saucepan, stir, and heat on medium-low heat.

When the mixture starts to look “clumpy” you know you’re just about there. Keep stirring the mixture, so as not to burn it.

After a few minutes (and this playdough really comes together quickly!) the dough will start to pull away from the sides and come together in a ball. I like to rotate my ball and “sear” on each side for just a few seconds, to ensure that the “gumminess” is gone. This will make the dough easier to knead.

Once the dough has cooled, add your essential oil. I added about 5 drops to our play dough.
