25 Best Saturday Morning Cartoons
Saturday mornings are just not the same. When I was growing up, I remember just how much I looked forward to snuggling up on the living room floor to watch Saturday morning cartoons. With the rise of on-demand viewing via Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, network tv simply isn’t offering the range of children’s programming it did when we were children.
I loved to wake up early and watch my favorite shows all morning. I hope today’s post takes you on a walk down memory lane AND allows you to share a few of these shows with your own children. While there were SO many incredible cartoons, I had to narrow down my list to my 10 personal favorites. I have included links to purchase these shows on DVD when available.
Are you ready? Let’s get started. But first…
Dashing and daring, courageous and caring, faithful and friendly with stories to share! All through the forest they sing out in chorus, marching along as their song fills the air! Gummi Bears – bouncing here and there and everywhere. (This will be in your head all day…..you’re welcome!)
*I couldn’t find Muppet Babies on DVD, but found a few children’s books.
I LOVED Muppet Babies! I watched this show every week. Anyone else still wondering what Nanny’s face looks like? Sure loved those striped socks though….
Nu nu nu nu nu – Inspector Gadget…I was a big fan of Inspector Gadget and loved his Go-Go Gadget Legs! Netflix has created a new version of the series, and we are excited to check it out, but in my mind, nothing can beat the original!
I loved Rainbow Brite, and had a few other Rainbow Brite toys, including a stuffed sprite and colorforms!
I’m not a fan of the new Smurfs, but think the original tv series had a lot of charm. Are you fan of the original Smurfs too?
Okay, which Jetsons’ gadget did you want the most as a child? As an adult, I am still torn between my own robotic housekeeper and the machine that automatically makes whatever food you desire at the press of a button. (Okay, the flying car would be pretty cool too…) I am really excited to share this show in particular with my kids! They’ll love it!
Another classic – with perhaps one of the most well-known theme songs of all time!
*I couldn’t find this on DVD to buy, but found a VHS tape with a few episodes. If you can’t remember this one, it’s worth checking out!
I really enjoyed this lesser-known Saturday morning cartoon! John Candy was a legend.
It doesn’t matter how many times the Care Bears are re-made, the Original Series remains the best! If you don’t agree, I just might have to give you the “Care Bear Stare!”
The Wuzzles: Creating Mash-ups before it was trendy!
*Link is to the original Christmas special!
I wish the tv series we grew up with was more readily accessible to kids, as the new movies are a far cry from the original. (I’m not a fan of remakes…) I LOVED watching this show each week!
Duck Tales (Whoo hoo) was probably my favorite of the Disney Saturday morning cartoons. 25 years later, and I am still a huge fan. My kids are all HUGE Disney fanatics, and I can’t wait to show them this cartoon series!!
Captain Planet, he’s a hero. Going to take pollution down to zero. Which power did YOU want? Earth? Wind? Water? Fire? Heart?
Heroes in a half-shell. Turtle power!
Does it get any more classic than Looney Tunes?! It’s a crime that so many of our kids don’t know who Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig are!
I LOVED this show! (And the theme song STILL gets stuck in my head….all the time!) My friends and I were Wakko, Yakko and Dot in middle school, and I loved Pinky & The Brain too!
There have been several versions of a Garfield cartoon show, but this remains my favorite. Gotta love Garfield!
Scooby Doo was perhaps my FAVORITE cartoon as a child…and they may or may not have been my imaginary friends…
*Link is to a special featuring 3 Richie Rich episodes and bonus Scooby Doo episode.
I loved Richie’s house as a kid. This is a great but sometimes lesser-known cartoon.
I still have a few of my Get Along Gang toys!!
Who was your favorite? My personal favorite was Pammy Panda!
My kids found this on Netflix and have LOVED watching it. I’m having fun re-living some of my childhood along with them! (Warning- do not watch unless you want the theme song stuck in your head for days!!)
I hope you enjoyed this trip down Saturday morning cartoon lane! Leave a comment and let me know what your favorite Saturday morning cartoon was? Did I skip your favorite? Let me know! Share with all of your fellow babies of the 80’s!
