*This post is brought to you in partnership with Timberdoodle. I received a free product to facilitate my review. All opinions are my own.

One development in education I absolutely LOVE is the new emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) activities. However, none of those areas come naturally to me or were areas of learning I particularly enjoyed as a student. Towards that end, I am always on the look-out for STEM activities that are EASY, inclusive, and high-interest. (And if I’m being entirely honest, I also need kits and projects that come with instructions!!!)

As soon as I saw the Robotis Pets kit from Timberdoodle, I knew my kids were going to love it. Have you ever met a child who didn’t want to build a robot?! My kids were thrilled at the opportunity to build one of three different robot pets – that actually MOVE!

The kit comes with everything you need – no special tools required. Kids are able to choose between creating a bird, a dog, or a cricket. Included in the kit is a full-color, pictorial instruction booklet – just right for those of us who aren’t natural builders. (AKA – Me!!) 😉

My 9 year old daughter was able to put together the bird in about 15 minutes. It was such a joy to watch her delight in her work- taking pride in creating a moving robot. I loved watching her carefully work to follow the guide – selecting the right pieces and constructing the robot in the correct way. The dog was a bit more challenging, and we decided to set it aside as a project to do on a “Daddy Day.”

I later caught my 5 year old son taking the bird apart, only to put it back together again. I loved watching his curiosity and determination – trying to figure out how the robot worked, and how the pieces fit together. As he worked, he was developing not only his fine motor skills, but also increasing his visual-spatial awareness and ability to problem-solve.

The kit is a perfect “entry-level” robotics kit – just right for young learners or kids who are just starting to explore STEM activities. If your child is a fan of other building toys, he/she will likely enjoy the Robotis Pets kit. The kit retails for $39.90. I encourage you to check out the Robotis Pets kit from Timberdoodle and see if it could be a fit into your homeschooling curriculum.
