“The rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the 12 districts must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes, to participate. The twenty-four tributes will be imprisoned in a vast outdoor arena that could hold anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland. Over a period of several weeks, the competitors must fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins.”
If you were to only read snippets, or simply watch the trailer for the movie, you may think The Hunger Games is simply a book about teenagers killing each other off for sport. What you may miss is the intensely gripping struggle Katniss faces, entirely outside of “the games.” As Katniss begins to start surviving other tributes in the games, she has to start making choices “that weigh survival against humanity, and life against love.” As the reader, you will be so drawn into her reality that your own may not matter until you’ve finished the last page of book three, “Mockingjay.” (I wish I was kidding.) Your mind will fill with questions that will beg to be answered, forcing you to keep turning the pages. Never in my life has a book series gripped me with the same level of intensity. I devoured all three books in The Hunger Games trilogy with a voracious appetite. The words could not have leapt off the page fast enough. Would Katniss survive? Will she fall in love with Peeta? (I did, right about page 31…) What will “The Gamemakers” do? Where are the other tributes? What is “The Capitol” up to?
I am not going to give you answers or a full plot synopsis, as I implore you to read these books for yourself. The Hunger Games trilogy made my Top 5 books of 2010 post, and are definitely in my Top 5 of all time as well. So, I beg of you as a sold-out lover of the written word, do not settle for watching the movie! Please read the books. I assure you with all that is within me that you will not be disappointed. I can’t promise your housework (and maybe your kids) won’t be ignored until you’re done…BUT, you will come away with a deep love of these books.
Today as I finished book one of the Hunger Games trilogy, I IMMEDIATELY grabbed for book two, “Catching Fire”, and dove right in. The crazy thing is, I’ve already read these books (and not that long ago!)…I know what happens, and yet, I find myself going crazy every minute I’m NOT reading. The Hunger Games trilogy is hauntingly addictive. I have four children, a business to run, a blog to write, a house to clean, endless piles of laundry to do….and yet, I am smack dab in the middle of the Hunger Games arena, eagerly taking in the action, rooting for my favorite tributes.
The Hunger Games has a way of taking over your every thought, drawing you in in such a powerfully alluring way. Right now, as I write this post, it is taking all of my self control not to go running downstairs to curl up on the couch with “Catching Fire.” I even dreamt of The Hunger Games last night. Suzanne Collins, author of this best-selling series knows how to entrance an audience, and I KNOW you will be gripped from the very first chapter of book one until the very last page of book three. (And then you’ll wish there was a book four…)

And now one of you has the chance to win The Hunger Games trilogy for yourself. Prepare to spend the first three days you have with the books doing nothing else whatsoever. (I’m serious.) I am so excited to get these books into the hands of someone else, and share this gripping story with you. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor. (I couldn’t help myself.)
I’ve only read the first one, but I’m rooting for Gale myself 😀

Rue, ofcourse.
I haven’t read any of the books yet, but my son has the first one and, as soon as he finds it in the abyss he calls a room, I am definitely going to read it!
My favorite is Katniss.

You will LOVE them!
I haven’t read the books so I don’t have a favorite character….yet!
I love Peeta, too!
I love love love this series! As I was reading your blog post, I kept thinking “me too!”. I was so entranced, I read nonstop, and unfortunately, I started them before Mockingjay came out. So I had a very long wait (only a few months actually, but it seemed like forever) for Mockingjay. And, yes, of course Peeta is my favorite character!
That happened to me the first time around too! It was like TORTURE waiting for that book to come out! I was so glad this time, on my re-reading, that I had all of them right there! Good luck, and nice to meet another Peeta fan!
I liked Katniss of course. I’d like to hear more about Gale also. I’ve only read the first book so far.
Peeta all the way. He grew up near me.
Im for Rue!
