Today’s post is simple, cheap, and sure to delight your family. I don’t know what happens at your house, but my kids go crazy whenever any type of wildlife pays a visit to our yard. While we occasionally see bunnies, squirrels, and even racoons and deer, our favorite backyard visitor is the hummingbird.

I’d always wanted a hummingbird feeder, and my husband picked one up on summer clearance for me. When we went to purchase the hummingbird food, we were shocked to see that it was around $8. Really? Eight bucks? So, the kids and I set out to make our own. (And we made it for next to nothing!)

Ingredients

2 cups water

1/2 cup sugar

red food coloring

First, combine the water and sugar, and bring to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. (You are basically making a simple syrup, and heating the mixture until the sugar is dissolved, and is no longer grainy.) Remove from heat and stir in the red food coloring. Allow the sugar mixture to cool, and add to your hummingbird feeder.

The hummingbirds have been flocking to our feeder! The kids have loved spotting the birds, and even named them! (Boomerang and Fred!) I hop e you and your family will be visited by these beautiful birds as well, once you make them this tasty food.
