When I was a little girl, I always looked forward to going to my grandma’s house. It was a time to play with my cousins, explore the park across the street, and spend time with family. We always knew to look in the extra fridge for a  special treat from Grandma. Usually, we found layered Jell-o treats. However, once in awhile, Grandma would make a sour cream chocolate cake – and it was good!

A few years ago, as I was flipping through a Kraft cookbook, I found this recipe, and was immediately brought back to my grandma’s table. I could practically see her fancy tablecloth and feel my feet swinging from the chair. This cake is truly “just like grandma used to make.” Though crafted from a cake mix, this cake has that “from scratch” taste. It’s sinfully rich and oh so fudgy. The sour cream and pudding help keep the cake moist and delicious.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this amazing layer cake.

Ingredients

1 cup chocolate chipsFudge Layer Cake (1 of 1)

1 chocolate cake mix

1 3.9 oz chocolate pudding mix

4 eggs

1 cup sour cream

1/2 cup oil

1/2 cup water

1 tub  (8 oz.) Cool Whip Whipped Topping (Do not thaw.)
To Prepare
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

3. Pour into 2 sprayed 9 inch round cake pans. Bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool on wire rack.
4. One option for the frosting and filling –
Microwave the tub of Cool Whip and remaining chocolate  1 1/2 min. or until chocolate is completely melted and mixture is well blended, stirring after 1 min. Let stand 15 min. to thicken. Then frost the middle, sides and top of the cake with the Cool Whip frosting.
