October is pumpkin season. We’re drinking pumpkin spice lattes, baking up dozens of pumpkin muffins, and heading out to the pumpkin patch with our kiddos. Why not celebrate our favorite squash with a book?! While there are TONS of great fiction and non-fiction picture books all about the pumpkin, I’ve compiled a list of my Top Ten. Happy Halloween and happy reading!!
1. The Runaway Pumpkin by Kevin Lewis
This is one of my all-time favorite pictures books. (It’s #70 on my 100 Picture Books You MUST Read to Your Kids List!) In the classroom, I used this book to teach my students about word choice. I also recently used this book in the character education curriculum I am developing to teach children about turning a bad situation into something good. This is a MUST-READ for fall.
2. Pumpkin Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington
Simple text and beautiful illustrations explain the life cycle of the pumpkin. This book will have your little one wanting to plant pumpkins!
3. It’s Pumpkin Time by Zoe Hall
Another simple take on the life cycle of the pumpkin. My children especially enjoy seeing the pumpkin transformed into a jack-o-lantern at the end!
4. The Pumpkin Book by Gail Gibbons
Gail Gibbons is a master at introducing non-fiction topics to children. Though not ideal for a read-aloud, this is a great one-on-one book for your curious child who may be seeking more information.
5. Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell
This story also covers the life cycle of a pumpkin, but in a fresh way. This story has almost a “Frosty the Snowman” type feel, as Tim waits for the return of his beloved pumpkin Jack. Information in a cute fiction story – it’s the whole package!
6. Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White
Absolutely adorable story about a girl named Rebecca who has a serious pumpkin problem! Kids will love the pictures and surprises in this story!
7. The Biggest Pumpkin Ever by Steven Kroll
This story of compromise and solutions has been a favorite of my children for years.
8. It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown by Charles M. Schulz
We make this movie a part of our yearly Halloween traditions – waiting right along with Linus for the Great Pumpkin to appear. If you like me, have grown up with this classic movie, why not get the book? It’s everything you love about the movie in a cute paper form! This is a favorite bedtime story for my kids during the month of October!
9. The Pumpkin Patch by Elizabeth King
I love the photographs in this book. This is a great opportunity for children to see real-life examples of life on a pumpkin patch. (Great for kids who may have an upcoming field trip too!)
10. Five Little Pumpkins by Iris Van Rynbach
5 Little Pumpkins is a beloved finger rhyme for children around Halloween. My own children love reciting this rhyme. This picture book is a great way to teach children the rhyme, and add on to the known story!
