A few months ago, Scholastic asked 13 children’s book illustrators to show us what the statement “Read Every Day. Lead a Better Life.” means to them. The result is a stunning collection of illustrations from some of our young readers’ biggest literary heroes: Dav Pilkey, Jeff Kinney, Kadir Nelson, Yuyi Morales, and Kazu Kibuishi, to name a few. In addition to the illustrations, we’ve created companion educational resources for teachers to use in their classrooms. ‘
They are calling the finished product, “The Art of Read Every Day.” The results are AMAZING. Some of the finest illustrators in children’s literature have created absolutely gorgeous works of art, all designed to encourage children and families to READ! When you visit “The Art of Read Every Day” website, in addition to getting to view the completely frame-worthy pictures, parents and educators will find a host of resources. (I am SO excited to use some of the discussion prompts with my children in the coming weeks!)
If you visit The Art of Read Every Day and you’ll discover the following:
- Artwork from 13 children’s book illustrators (see the full list here)
- Videos of the artists reading aloud and speaking about their artistic processes. (Budding artists will find this especially interesting.)
- Discussion guides with writing and art prompts for students (grades K-2, 3-5) (These activities and questions are a treasure trove! I love the creativity and critical thinking they inspire!)
You can also purchase the individual poster art as well. At just $3.95 per poster, you’re getting an incredible deal on art for your home. I will be framing LuUyen Pham’s poster (at right) and hanging it in our playroom. Her image feels like home to me. I know exactly how those children are feeling – as I see myself in this image; lost in a book – perfectly content in some faraway place. Reading is magic, and these posters stir those feelings inside me.
Reading is a huge part of our family life. All six of us, from my husband and I down to our 20 month old, make time every day for reading. Reading inspires creativity, sparks imagination, and broadens your world. My life is better, brighter, and fuller because I read. I hope that these beautiful works of art will inspire you and your family to read – every single day.
Three of you lucky readers will have the opportunity to win a set of posters! I am giving away 3 sets of the Read Every Day poster by author/illustrator Jeff Kinney of the Diary of A Wimpy Kid series. I chose this poster, as my 2nd grader is currently obsessed with his books. As a parent and fellow voracious reader, it is so fun to see her engrossed in a book series.
Win a poster for you, AND a poster for your child’s teacher. (As a former classroom teacher, I can tell you what an awesome Christmas gift one of these posters would be!) I hope all of you will check out the The Art of Read Every Day and enter to win as well! Good luck and happy reading!
