Have you ever wondered how a villain is born? What events and circumstances must transpire to turn someone into something dark and cold? How does someone’s past affect their future? Is there more to the story than we think we know?
I’ve always been intrigued by Disney villains. Let’s face it – a part of us actually likes the bad guy. Villains let us get in touch with some of our untapped feelings. We want good to triumph – but can understand the pain and anguish that can cause others to act out.
Maleficent popped up on my radar about a year ago – when I learned it was in production. I was immediately excited – wanting to learn the back-story behind one of Disney’s most infamous villains. Who is Maleficent? What was the story behind her pain and anger? Finally, we will have answers.
While at the 2014 Disney Social Media Mom’s Conference, I was able to see a special sneak peek of the upcoming film Maleficent. We were able to watch an exclusive 9 minutes of this exciting new film – and it was AMAZING. The film is breathtakingly beautiful – alive with Disney magic, gorgeous cinematic effects and powerful performances from the cast. This is one movie you won’t want to miss.
“Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.
The film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.
“Maleficent” is produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg, with Angelina Jolie, Michael Vieira, Don Hahn, Palak Patel, Matt Smith and Sarah Bradshaw serving as executive producers. Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay. “Maleficent” opens in U.S. theaters on May 30, 2014
We were also blessed with the opportunity to hear from the delightful and talented Elle Fanning, who stars in the film as Aurora. In the story, Sleeping Beauty (Aurora), is cursed to prick her finger and fall into an eternal slumber by her 16th birthday. In true Disney form, just after learning Elle had recently turned 16, we heard a noise, saw a poof of smoke, and just like that – Maleficent appeared in the room.
After interacting with Elle, Maleficent left the room, and the roomful of bloggers had the opportunity to sing Happy Birthday to her. She is a wonderfully sweet actress with great talent. It was an honor to help her celebrate her birthday.
Maleficent hits theaters May 30th!! I can’t wait!
