Last weekend, my family headed to beautiful Sauvie Island to catch the first colors of all and enjoy some wonderful time as a family at The MAiZE! My husband and I had both gone through the maze before we had children, but this was our first time to go through as a family.
Before you enter the maize, you’ll find a selection of “Passports” to help guide you. As you walk through the corn, look for the numbered signs. Read the question that corresponds to the number and find out which way to go. There are passports that are just right for every maize-goer.
It was so fun to watch my kids get excited about finding the next number….even when we found the same number over and over again! (But in a maze, you have to figure that getting lost is half the fun!)
Along the way, you’ll find fun photo ops, music (which you can walk towards when you are lost!), and a bridge that allows you to look over the entire field.
The maze is wonderfully intricate, challenging, and FUN! We let our kids take turns being the “leader” and choosing which way to go. Once you reach the half-way point, you can choose to exit the maize and take a break, or conclude your maize fun. But be forewarned -the second half of the maize is MUCH more challenging (and they are NOT kidding!)
We braved the second half for a little while, making it as far as guidepost #8 (about a dozen times!) before heading back and exploring other areas of the farm.
I grew up going to the pumpkin patch and loved sharing that experience with my kids. While the cow train wasn’t running while we were there, you just might get lucky and get to hop a ride on this local favorite! You will be able to catch a free hay-ride out to the pumpkin field, where you can choose your perfect pumpkin.
Other fun features include an animal barn, antique tractors, a hay pyramid, and a small hay maze for younger children. There is also a fantastic market that sells wonderfully fresh produce and a gift shop. You can also purchase food on site.
