Scholastic believes (as I do!!!) that kids need fabulous, interesting, and exciting book choices at EVERY LEVEL. Until recently, there has been a hole in the market. Kids go from emergent readers to easy readers to chapter books. Scholastic Branches helps our kids transition in a much more natural way. Scholastic Branches meets the needs of kids who are ready to move past easy readers, but aren’t quite ready for traditional chapter books.
Each book includes: easy-to-read text, simple plot lines, plenty of context cues, cliffhanger chapter endings, and purposeful illustrations (on every page!) that aid in reading comprehension.
The Branches line is solely made up of series. We want young readers to return to their favorite characters again and again—because that is how they build reading stamina and confidence!
There is a Branches book for every kid! According the Kids and Parents Reading Report™: Fifth Edition 73% of kids believe that they would read more if they could find more books that they like. With 14 different series and counting Branches delivers on providing kids with plenty of choices, so every reader can find the perfect book for them. Does your kid love to laugh? Perfect! There is the zany and hilarious Kung Pow Chicken. Does your reader love a fantastical adventure? Dragon Masters has it all: Dragons, a Dragon Stone, a king, a wizard, and magic! How about a spooky story? Eerie Elementary will have your young readers on the edge of their seats!
Each Branches book is chock-full of loveable, relatable characters! And all of the books explore relevant themes for readers ages 5-8 like friends, school, magic, and adventure—ensuring that each book will grab your young readers’ attention!
There is truly a Scholastic Branches series for every child! Even my 4th grade daughter (who is a strong reader) was excited to dive into a handful of these books. Since receiving the books three days ago, she has read three of the books! Her favorite was Missy’s Super Duper Royal Deluxe. She said that “if you like Junie B. or Ramona, you’ll love Missy!”
My 7 year old is a phenomenal reader, but when presented with a traditional chapter book, he often gets discouraged before he even begins reading. He doesn’t see the incredible story in front of him; he sees hundreds of pages (without illustrations!) and a never-ending reading assignment. In his case, Scholastic Branches appeals to his shorter attention span, not necessarily his reading level. As a parent, I’m thrilled he wants to read. As a reader, he is thrilled to have an enjoyable book that he feels like he can conquer. Here is what he had to say about Boris on the Move by Andrew Joyner:
“I liked it because it was short. When I look at a big chapter book, I don’t want to read it. I liked all the pictures. I think all 7 year olds would like this book. My favorite part is when he finds the cat, because it reminds me of my cat.”
If Scholastic Branches books are the springboard that propels my very-talented but somewhat reluctant reader (especially when it comes to fiction!), I will be thrilled. He has already asked to read the next book in the Boris series, and has his eye on a few other books in the collection!
