Christmas is right around the corner – and with snow on the ground at my house, it’s really starting to feel like the holidays.
The day after Thanksgiving, I pull out all of my Christmas decorations, and get to work making our home feel merry and bright. There’s just nothing quite like snuggling up by the fire at Christmas – seeing the stockings carefully hung, or watching “White Christmas” at night by the lights of the tree. Decorating my house just adds to the magic of the season.
My mantel is trimmed with a simple garland, that I wrapped with a string of lights and a string of red and green wooden beads. I have a love of all things vintage and look for pieces that celebrate the look of the 50’s and 60’s. A large ceramic Santa, a “repro” metal sign, and a handful of my grandmother’s figurines rest on my mantel. I complimented the vintage items with a “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” that I printed out and two red metal lanterns that I found on Oriental Trading.
Since we homeschool, we spend a lot of time at our dining room table. This year, I wanted to add a bit of flair to our window. I used another basic garland to surround our plants. A wooden Santa and some sweet little gingerbread men my children made for me round out the window-sill display. The top of the window is adorned with a string of jingle bell lights. These cast a delightful warm glow and really make the room feel festive.
My kitchen window was a place to celebrate “Christmas goodies.” (Who doesn’t love all of the treats that go hand in hand with the holidays?!) I made a piece of subway art that celebrates “holiday food” and surrounded it with a few sweet little treat-themed pieces, including my grandmother’s figurines, and my great-grandmother’s Santa and Mrs. Claus salt & pepper shakers.
I was excited to place my two new glass candy jars in my kitchen window. I filled one jar with vintage-looking striped candy sticks, and the other with peppermint marshmallows. Oriental Trading has a variety of jars in different sizes. I just had to have them for my Christmas window! I love the result. (I think I’ll keep them up and change-up the “filling” to keep them seasonal!)
