My daughter and I had the privilege of attending Matilda the Musical last night. It was a magical experience to watch one of our very favorite books unfold before us onstage. Matilda the Musical is more than a retelling of Roald Dahl’s masterpiece – it’s a beautiful, touching, artfully heart-wrenching and humorous reminder that we can change our stories.
The children in this production are nothing short of amazing. As the incredibly talented young Jenna Weir sang, “Even if you’re little, you can do a lot, you mustn’t let a little thing like, ‘little’ stop you” – I couldn’t help but think of the ways each of these young actors is living that belief out. I expect BIG things and long careers from each of these remarkable (and anything but revolting!) young actors.
All anyone could talk about as we were exiting the theater and making our way to our car was how amazing Jenna Weir was as Matilda. She brought Matilda to life with flawless grace – displaying the breadth of human emotion, teaching us to believe in story, in hope, and in our ability to not allow negative circumstances to break us. Jenna- you are a star!
As much as you hated The Trunchbull as a child (I had nightmares about Chokey!), you’ll love the way Dan Chameroy brings her to life. Similarly, Matt Harrington absolutely delivers as Mr. Wormwood – and don’t miss his end-of-intermission performance!! These are two characters and performers you’ll love to hate. They do the seemingly impossible – bringing humor and warmth to two villainous characters.
Full of whimsy, heart, illusion (you’ll be wondering how the Trunchbull twirled the girl by her pigtails all night!), and courage- Matilda the Musical will take you on an emotional journey you won’t soon forget.
I hope you will let the story of this extraordinary girl who dared to change her story inspire you. Get your tickets and bring the whole family to this award-winning and magical show.
