The Smurfs are returning to the theaters on April 7th in a new feature film – Smurfs: The Lost Village!

In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her best friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting and thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village before the evil wizard Gargamel does. Embarking on a rollercoaster journey full of action and danger, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history!

To celebrate the new film, I decided to let my kids create some egg carton toadstools – designed to look just like a Smurf’s house! These cute little mushrooms are a cute way to add some whimsy to any house plant!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • egg carton
  • paint brush
  • washable paint
  • good scissors (child scissors will make this more difficult)
  • sticks, dowels, etc.

Start by cutting your egg carton into individual cups. The tops end up looking just like little mushroom caps (or Smurf house rooftops!)

Paint each carton cup with washable paint. The Smurfs have red roofs, but you can use whatever color makes you happy. After you paint your base color, paint on the white dots.

Next, find your perfect base. I used pieces of lumber for a more rustic look. You can either glue your base to the top, or just hang the carton on top of the stick.

Aren’t these adorable? The kids had so much fun creating these and I love the result.
