One subject my kids just can’t get enough of is science. Understanding just how important STEM education is, I absolutely LOVE finding companies and products that provide science instruction in FUN and engaging ways! The Young Scientists Club does just that.
The Young Scientists Club is a monthly subscription box designed to help kids ages 5-12 develop a love of science through hands-on exploration, experiments, and activities. You can choose to have kits delivered once or twice per month, and the kits are super affordable (Just $11.99 w/a $4.95 shipping fee). You can order your kits on The Young Scientists Club website.
With 36 different kits in all, with topics ranging from Polymers to Planets – your young scientists will explore a full range of scientific fields – sparking new interests and ideas along the way. The kits include everything you need and include non-scientist friendly instructions. 😉
Throughout the next few months, the kids and I will be diving into a different kit each month, and sharing our experience with you. The first kit we chose to dive into is Kit #30 – Owls.
The kit included 4 activities. The first had kids sorting animals into three categories: herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.
The second activity helped kids to understand the food chain. The third dealt with food webs – and helped kids understand nature’s complexity and connectivity.
The fourth was the most hands-on – and the most anticipated. The kit included a real owl pellet! Kids will get to dissect the pellet, retrieve the bones, and figure out which type(s) of animal skeleton they are identifying! This experiment really was a great culmination of the other topics in the kit! I love the way everything builds and connects.
My son was amazed at just how many bones he found inside the pellet! At first, he wasn’t quite sure which animal we were finding -but the handy guide helped us determine this owl had eaten a rodent! He’s not quite done with the “skeleton recovery” but is looking forward to seeing a full “reconstruction.”
The kit also includes several pages of kid-friendly instruction fro Celsius the Science Bug. These pages help walk your child through the kit – bestowing useful and easy to understand info along the way. (This also allows the kit to be student-directed/independent! There’s nothing for you to prepare, or pre-study! It’s all right there in the kit & guide!)
The Young Scientists Website offers a big variety of science kits to choose from. In addition to The Young Scientists Club monthly kits featured above, you can also choose kits from The Magic School Bus Science Club and kits from the Clifford Science Club! (We’ve experienced a Clifford kit in the past, and my kids absolutely LOVED it!)
There’s even MORE amazing science/STEM products available on the website. I hope you’ll check out the product that has won the 2018 Reader Award for the Science Kits and Supplies category from Practical Homeschooling! (That’s a pretty big deal in the homeschooling world – and as a homeschooling parent, I whole-heartedly agree with the distinction!) So what are you waiting for? Go check it out!!
