*This post is written in partnership with Broadway in Portland. I received complimentary tickets to the show. Opinions are 100% my own.

I have something to confess….before last night, I didn’t actually know the story of Fiddler on the Roof. (I know. I know.) Like most people, I’d definitely heard the iconic music. I even knew the words to “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Matchmaker,” and “Sunrise Sunset.” But, as my husband and I sat down to watch one of the most beloved musicals in history, I literally had no idea what we would see unfold on stage. And now I want to go back and see it again. (Literally. I’d go back tonight if I had the tickets.)

I was blown (and swept) away. Fiddler on the Roof is a beautiful enigma – a story that both breaks and warms your heart. It’s a story about faith, family, and the tension, love, strength, and hope that exists within both.

On our way home, as my husband and I were talking about the play, we both agreed that Yehezkel Lazarov wasn’t only INCREDIBLE as Tevye, but may in fact be the best actor we’ve ever seen on stage. He brought warmth, humor, and authenticity to one of Broadway’s most iconic roles.

The entire ensemble cast was a delight – especially when performing together. There’s something magical that happens when a group of people committed to sharing their creative talent share a stage. As an audience member, you could feel both the joy and sincerity radiating from the stage. You get the sense that these are actors who are genuinely invested in this story.

While Fiddler on the Roof is not a story that needs “wow moments” or special effects to be memorable, there were certainly a few jaw-dropping surprises in this production. It’s a must-see.

While Fiddler on the Roof’s Portland engagement is sold-out (insert crying noises), there are some FANTASTIC shows on their way to the Rose City this season!
